Sadwaqas Ghilmani (1890-1972)

This week the SHSS Seminar Series will host a presentation by

Prof. Ashirbek Muminov
(Chair of the Department of Religious Studies, ENU).

Friday 4 March 2016
4pm- 6pm
Room 8.307

He will present an important source on the history of traditional Islam in Kazakhstan, “Sadwaqas Ghïlmani. Biographies of the Islamic Scholars of Our Times”.

The work’s author Sadwaqas-qazhï Ghïlmani (1890-1972) was born in Ereymentau raion, Akmolinsk oblast, and was the Chief Qazi for the Kazakh SSR from 1952 until 1972. He distinguished himself by his deep religious knowledge and left behind several manuscripts.

The present edition was prepared by a team that included Kazakhstani and American researchers, and is published in two languages: Kazakh and English. The edition is based on a single authorial manuscript. The manuscript comprises 528 folios. The biographical dictionary is divided into nine sections which contain the biographies of 59 of the most erudite Kazakh Islamic scholars from the northern and central regions of Kazakhstan.

The publication of this important source on the history of traditional Islam reveals new perspectives to the study of Kazakh Muslim society, looking backward and forward, horizontally (various groups and types of believers), and vertically (theological circles, controversies, and debates). Undoubtedly it has significance for the modern and recent history of Kazakhstan.
