(Sacred Lineages in Kazakhstan: an Analysis of the Sources)

Professor Muminov’s talk will explore the sacred genealogies (Shajaras) of religious descent groups in what is now Southern Kazakhstan as a source for understanding Islamic belief and practice on the steppe and in the settled communities on its fringes.

Ashirbek Muminov is Professor of Religious Studies at the L. N. Gumilev Eurasian National University in Astana. He has previously been a senior researcher at the R. B. Suleimenov Institute of Oriental Studies in Almaty, and the Raihan Al-Biruni Insitute of Oriental Studies in Tashkent. He is the author of numerous scientific works, including most recently Islamization and Sacred Lineages in Central Asia: The Legacy of Ishaq Bab in Narrative and Genealogical Traditions 2 Vols (Almaty: “Daik-Press”, 2008 & 2013), co-edited with Devin DeWeese.

The seminar will take place on Tuesday 10 March, 4:20pm, room 6.519.
